Citizens of Earth: Why did God create government?
Purpose#1: To Bring Justice (Genesis 9:5-6)
What kind of punishments can the government give?
The penalty should match the crime. (verse 6)
What if a government gets carried away?
Government is accountable to God for how they bring justice (verse 6)
Principles from Romans 13:1-7:
1. Government authorities have been instituted by God.
2. Government officials serve God.
3. Government serves God by brining justice.
Purpose #2: To Encourage Human flourishing (Genesis 9:1,7)
1 Peter 2:13-14
Loving our Neighbor with Good Government:
1. Use Genesis 9 as a biblical grid for voting.
2. Seek wisdom.
Citizens of Heaven: How do Christians live in relation to government?
1) We joyfully submit to government for the Lord’s sake. (Titus 3:1, Matthew 22:21)
2) We wisely leverage the government for God’s kingdom purposes. (Acts 22)
3) We boldly confront with the truth. (Acts 17, Acts 19)
4) We persistently pray for kingdom growth. (1 Timothy 2:1-4)
5) We trust in God’s good sovereignty. (Matthew 28:18, John 19:11)
6) We are faithful to our role as ambassadors for Christ’s kingdom. (2 Corinthians 5:20)
7) We remember our primary identity and allegiance. (Romans 13:8-10)
